With its plain "open back" shell, this is a generic banjo reminiscent of today's Deering Goodtime banjo. The Deering is a better instrument, of course, more solidly made of better materials. I have been learning to play on an old type zither banjo for several months now and I have decided to move on to a better style of 5 string as the old zither is years old and it is terrible to keep in tune, I have aquired an old KAY banjo which has a very nice tone and I am interested in trying to date the banjo, the only thing I can see on it is on the back of the head where it is stamped KB54, can anyone tell me if it is of any help for dating, any commants would be helpfull, Cheers, Robert.
