The M1 helmet is a combat helmet that was used by the U. The M1 helmet has become an icon of the US military, with its design inspiring other militaries around the world. The United States quickly commenced manufacture of a version of the Mk I, designated the M , producing some 2,, by the end of hostilities. Between and , a number of new designs of helmets were tested by the Infantry Board in comparative trials with the M and helmets of other armies. One of those designs, the Helmet Number 5A, was selected for further study. Further ballistic tests at the Aberdeen Proving Ground resulted in the decision to retain the M in ,  which was given a redesigned leather cradle and designated MA1  or "Kelly" helmet.
Despite agreements that the nations of Eastern Europe would be free to hold elections, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Albania and Bulgaria soon became puppet states along with the occupied East Germany. To maintain order and uniformity, the forces of the Warsaw Pact soon began to be armed with Soviet weapons, and equipped with Soviet gear. Although Soviet helmet designs were widely adopted in the years following the end of the World War, there is actually a great deal of variety in the types of helmets used throughout the Communist Bloc. Today, it is easy to think of Soviet domination across Eastern Europe, but one must understand that the various nations still maintained their unique national identity in terms of uniforms and equipment. This was most certainly true of helmets.
